Acid/Alkaline

Body pH – How to Measure It and What it Means

A simple test you can do to measure your susceptibility to cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, and many other degenerative diseases.

From the website Alkalize For Health.

How to Do the Saliva pH Test

Wait at least 2 hours after eating. Fill your mouth with saliva and then swallow it. Do this again to help ensure that the saliva is clean. Then the third time, put some saliva onto pH paper.

The pH paper should turn blue. This indicates that your saliva is slightly alkaline at a healthy pH of 7.4. If it is not blue, compare the color with the chart that comes with the pH paper. If your saliva is acid (below pH of 7.0) wait two hours and repeat the test.

Where to Get pH Paper

It would be good if health food stores and pharmacies would stock pH paper. Why not go to your local health food store or pharmacy and suggest this to them? There are many suppliers of pH paper. Look for laboratory suppliers in the phone book. You want narrow range pH paper measuring pH 4.5 to 7.5 or pH 4.5 to 8.5. One source is Micro Essential Laboratory Inc., Brooklyn, N.Y. 11210 telephone 718-338-3618. They will send you a catalogue. When sending a container of pH paper through the mail to a friend, a single roll dispenser (catalog #334 that measures pH 4.5 – 7.5) is quite sturdy and should not break. However, the Jumbo strips (catalog #3827) in the more fragile plastic tube container are larger and easier to read. These pH strips to measure acid/alkaline balance belong in every family medicine kit, right beside the thermometer to measure body temperature.

Saliva pH and Cancer

"When healthy, the pH of blood is 7.4, the pH of spinal fluid is 7.4, and the pH of saliva is 7.4. Thus the pH of saliva parallels the extra cellular fluid…pH test of saliva represents the most consistent and most definitive physical sign of the ionic calcium deficiency syndrome…The pH of the non-deficient and healthy person is in the 7.5 (dark blue) to 7.1 (blue) slightly alkaline range. The range from 6.5 (blue-green) which is weakly acidic to 4.5 (light yellow) which is strongly acidic represents states from mildly deficient to strongly deficient, respectively. Most children are dark blue, a pH of 7.5. Over half of adults are green-yellow, a pH of 6.5 or lower, reflecting the calcium deficiency of aging and lifestyle defects. Cancer patients are usually a bright yellow, a pH of 4.5, especially when terminal." The Calcium Factor: The Scientific Secret of Health and Youth, by Robert R. Barefoot and Carl J. Reich, M.D., Gilliland Printing Inc., Arkansas City, Kansas, 1996.

The Importance of Acid and Alkaline Balance for Health

Virtually all degenerative diseases including cancer, heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, kidney and gall stones, and tooth decay are associated with excess acidity in the body. While the body has a homeostatic mechanism that maintains a constant pH 7.4 in the blood, this mechanism works by depositing and withdrawing acid and alkaline minerals from other locations including the bones, soft tissues, body fluids and saliva. Therefore, the pH of these other tissues can fluctuate greatly. The pH of saliva offers a window through which you can see the overall pH balance in your body.

Cancer cannot exist in an alkaline environment. All forms of arthritis are associated with excess acidity. Acid in the body dissolves both teeth and bones. Whatever health situation you are faced with, you can monitor your progress toward a proper acid/alkaline balance by testing your saliva pH.

What are Acid and Alkaline?

Water (H2O) ionizes into hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions. When these ions are in equal proportions, the pH is a neutral 7. When there are more H+ ions than OH- ions then the water is said to be acid. If OH- ions outnumber the H+ ions then the water is alkaline. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14 and is logarithmic, which means that each step is ten times the previous. In other words, a pH of 4.5 is 10 times more acid than 5.5, 100 times more acid than 6.5 and 1,000 times more acid than 7.5.

Acid and Alkaline Minerals and Foods

Minerals with a negative electrical charge are attracted to the H+ ion. These are called acid minerals. Acid minerals include: chlorine (Cl-), sulfur (S-), phosphorus (P-), and they form hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and phosphoric acid (H3PO4). Minerals with a positive electrical charge are attracted to the negatively charged OH- ion. These are called alkaline minerals. Nutritionally important alkaline minerals include calcium (Ca+), potassium (K+), magnesium (Mg+), and sodium (Na+). (Cancer patients tend to have an excess of sodium. - Gerson page 97). Also important for cancer treatment and prevention are the alkaline trace minerals rubidium and cesium. To determine if a food is acid or alkaline, it is burned and the ash is mixed with water. If the solution is acid or alkaline then the food is called acid or alkaline. Ash is the mineral content of the food.

Twelve Ways to Restore Acid/Alkaline Balance in Your Body

If your saliva is too acid you may wish to increase the alkalinity of your body. Ways to do this include:

1. Eat mostly alkaline foods. The general "rule of thumb" is to eat 20% acid foods and 80% alkaline foods. Minimize the "strongly acid" foods.

Strongly Acid
(minimize)

Mild Acid
20%

Mild Alkaline
80%

Strongly Alkaline
(supplement)

meat

grains

fruits

calcium

fish

legumes

vegetables

magnesium

eggs

nuts

berries

potassium

hard cheese

milk, yoghurt, kefir, soft curds

cesium

It is the sulphur in the concentrated protein of meat, fish, eggs and hard cheese, and phosphorous in meat and soft drinks that makes these foods so acidic.

Fats and oils have a neutral pH, neither acid nor alkaline. Plant-based beverages (tea, coffee, cocoa, herbal teas, beer, wine, juices of fruits and vegetables) are generally mildly alkaline. The above summary is based on a detailed Acid Base Food Table you can download.

The healthiest dairy products to consume have never been pasteurized or homogenized. Look for "raw" milk, and cheese made from raw milk. The healthiest way to consume grains and legumes is in the form of sprouts.

2. Supplement your diet with alkaline minerals. The main alkaline minerals in the body are calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. These minerals complement each other. For example, calcium is needed to contract a muscle and magnesium is needed to relax it. At a cellular level, your cells maintain a balance of potassium inside and sodium outside, but this pumping of potassium and sodium requires magnesium. The calcium concentration in the cells is controlled by sodium. All four of these minerals work together in the body. Problems arise in the body when one or more of the minerals are deficient or when the minerals are out of balance with each other.

People in North America tend to consume too much calcium and sodium and insufficient magnesium and potassium. This is often reflected in urine tests which show calcium and sodium being excreted while magnesium and potassium are being retained. (This is why we are not interested in urine pH. An alkaline urine simply shows that some alkaline minerals are being discarded by the body. Of much greater interest is the pH of saliva, which reflects your success in creating an alkaline condition within your body.)

In the North American diet, excess calcium is coming primarily from dairy products, and excess sodium is coming from "prepared foods" that are loaded with salt. Largely missing from the diet are magnesium and potassium that would come from eating fruits and vegetables.A diet based on fruits and vegetables, grains and legumes, with a small amount of dairy, would give the body all four of the alkaline minerals in better balance. This is the diet we recommend in point number 1 above. Given that the kidneys will excrete excess minerals and retain what the body needs, it is not necessary to be overly concerned about consuming "right" amounts of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. Just make sure that your diet contains all four of the alkaline minerals in reasonable balance.

Bones and teeth are made from calcium phosphate. You can consume calcium in the form of bone meal or calcium hydroxyapatite which contain the needed phosphate, or you can take your calcium with a separate source of phosphate, such as lecithin. To preserve your bones and teeth it is good to consume at least one gram of calcium and one tablespoon of lecithin daily. We mention lecithin because it provides many benefits to the body. Vitamin D is needed for absorption and utilization of calcium, and doctors are recommending more (the Canadian Cancer Society recommends at least 1,000 IU daily for all Canadians) as the benefits of vitamin D become known. Teeth are held in the gums by connective tissue, and formation of connective tissue needs vitamin C. About 3 or 4 grams of vitamin C daily is required to prevent receding gums and the formation of pockets between the teeth and gums.

Tooth enamel is rebuilt both from within and without by an enzyme called adenosine diphosphatase. This enzyme is one of dozens of enzymes in the body that are inactivated by fluoride. It is best to avoid all sources of fluoride.

The positively charged H+ ion in acid saliva will pull the negatively charged phosphate ion right out of the tooth. Alkaline saliva is necessary to preserve and rebuild tooth enamel. Drink acidic liquids (eg. lemonade) through a straw to minimize contact with the teeth. Rinse the mouth with water after consuming an acidic food or liquid.

Calcium supplements generally contain some magnesium, but it seems that more is needed. Magnesium supplements are readily available on the Internet. You can use services such as www.shopzilla.com to find the lowest price. Or take a tablespoon of "milk of magnesia" before going to bed. There i evidence that magnesium helps to prevent cancer. After nine months, women on magnesium supplements increased bone density by about 11%. - Journal of Nutritional Medicine, 1991; 2:165-178.

If you take your vitamin C in the form of crystals, you can mix a teaspoon of vitamin C crystals with the teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate. Add water and wait until the fizzing stops before drinking it. The sodium bicarbonate will neutralize the acidity of the vitamin C. (Make sure your baking soda does NOT contain aluminum. You may need to buy it from a health food store.)

If you want to eat salt, use sea salt. It is grayish white in color and comes in large crystals. Put it in a grinder and keep it on the dining table beside the pepper grinder.

Dr. Gerson (page 246) gave his cancer patients a 10% potassium solution. Perhaps you can find a potassium drink in your local health food store. Potassium tablets are commonly available. Search on the Internet for a suppliers of potassium chloride, potassium bicarbonate, potassium citrate, and potassium iodide if you cannot find them locally.

Salts of the alkaline minerals cesium, rubidium and potassium have been found by Dr. Brewer to be particularly effective in fighting cancer.

"A mass spectrographic analysis of cancer cells showed that the cell membrane readily attached cesium, rubidium and potassium, and transmitted these elements with their associated molecules into the cancer cell. In contrast cancer membranes did not transmit sodium, magnesium, and calcium into the cell: the amount of calcium within a cancer cell is only about 1% of that for normal cells. Potassium transports glucose into the cell. Calcium and magnesium transport oxygen into the cell. As a consequence of the above, oxygen cannot enter cancer cells so the glucose which is normally burned to carbon dioxide and water undergoes fermentation to form lactic acid within the cell. This anaerobic condition was pointed out by Warburg, as early as 1924.

Potassium, and especially rubidium and cesium are the most basic of the elements. When they are taken up by the cancer cells they will thus raise the pH of the cells. Since they are very strong bases as compared to the weak lactic acid it is possible that the pH will be raised to values in the 8.5 to 9 range. In this range the life of the cancer cell is short, being a matter of days at the most. The dead cancer cells are then absorbed by the body fluids and eventually eliminated from the system." - Dr. Brewer, High pH Cancer Therapy With Cesium, page 5.

While it is well known that calcium needs vitamin D in order to be absorbed and utilized, most people in northern climates tend to be deficient in vitamin D, particularly in winter. Even in summer, recent advice from the medical profession to avoid the sun and to block ultraviolet light from reaching the skin through the use of sunscreens leads to vitamin D deficiency. Better advice is to experience the sun in moderation in all seasons. Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of a summer day, but otherwise utilize the sunlight to maximize your vitamin D production. Plus, consume vitamin D dietary supplements in all seasons. There is evidence that vitamin D helps prevent cancer. A good source of vitamin D is fish oil. Fish oil also contains vitamin A, and there is evidence that vitamin A helps cure leukemia. Leukemia is the most common childhood cancer, affecting children as young as two or three years of age. Good nutrition must begin with the parents before the child is conceived.

While it is commonly understood that the body needs calcium to build bones, what is not generally known is bones are a complex matrix of many different minerals and if all the required minerals are not present then strong bones cannot be built. There are at least 18 key bone-building nutrients essential for optimum bone health. The implication is that it is easier to destroy bone through excess acidity in the body than it is to rebuild bone. Furthermore, as farm soils become depleted of many trace minerals the foods grown on these soils contain less and less of the required nutrients. At last count, the human body requires 90 different nutrients for optimum health, and the list is growing year by year. A good nutritional supplement is no longer optional.

Healthy Joints

Magnesium is a precursor to an important substance in the body called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid levels in the body are higher in people whose diet contains an abundance of magnesium. Hyaluronic acid is necessary for connective tissue formation and helps maintain healthy joints,  prevent skin wrinkles, prevent hernias, and promote the healing of wounds and surgical incisions.

An abundance of B vitamins, is also necessary for healthy joints. Absorption of B vitamins is facilitated by beneficial bacteria in the intestines. Many drugs interfere with these beneficial bacteria. For more information see Dr. David Williams Alternatives October 2006. (Editor’s note: The use of niacinamide (the amide form of vitamin B3) to reverse arthritis and joint pain, and rebuild damaged cartilage was discovered by Dr. William Kaufman in the 1930′s. Dr. Kaufman divided the total daily dose into ten small doses to be taken periodically through the waking hours in order to maintain a constant level of the vitamin in the blood. For more information do an Internet search for "niacinamide arthritis kaufman".) Niacinamide supplementation may also help prevent type 1 diabetes.

Dietary supplementation with DMG (Dimethylglycine) improves oxygen utilization throughout the body, and is particularly useful in areas such as joints which receive little oxygen. People with many different joint problems are found to respond favorably to DMG.

Dietary supplementation with SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) and B vitamins (folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12) helps reduce pain and inflammation while rebuilding cartilage.

This combination of B vitamins, DMG, and SAMe works magic in many areas of the body, helping to prevent cancer and metastases, heal the arteries, cleanse the liver, strengthen the immune system, reverse the damaging effects of aging and much more. Many people may already have sufficient DMG and SAMe in their body, with their utilization hindered only by insufficient B vitamins (folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12). We would suggest starting with B vitamin supplementation, followed if needed by DMG supplementation because it is inexpensive. Some of the DMG will be converted by the body into SAMe. Save the more costly SAMe supplementation for last and only if necessary. Diagram of the metabolic pathways.

Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. Folate gets its name from the Latin word "folium" because it is found in leafy greens (foliage), which are also a good source of magnesium.

3. Supplement your diet with freshly made fruit and vegetable juices. As a treatment for cancer, some doctors recommend one 8 oz glass per hour for every waking  hour of the day. We could never eat the amount of nutrition we drink with these juices.

4. Learn and practice Transcendental Meditation (TM). TM is a non-dietary way to increase the alkalinity of your body. TM gives a level of rest twice as deep as sleep and is an effective antidote to stress. Stress is insidious because it affects us 24 hours each day. Stress causes the heart to beat too fast, the muscles to be too tense, the entire metabolism to be too fast. Metabolic waste products are acids (lactic acid, uric acid, etc.), which is one reason why dissolving stress increases the alkalinity of the body. The effectiveness of TM is evidenced by a 53% reduction in overall health care costs and a 55% reduction in cancer (Psychosomatic Medicine 49 (1987): 493-507,American Journal of Managed Care Volume 3, Number 1, (1997): 135-144).

The above 4 ways to increase the alkalinity of your body should be effective for most people. If you have difficulty becoming alkaline, here are eight more ways for you to try.

5. As people age, the digestive system weakens. The result can be nutritional deficiencies in the body, even when the diet is adequate. It is not just what you eat, but what you absorb that is important. Chew each bite of food until it is liquid before swallowing it. Smaller meals are easier to digest. To improve your digestion, it may be helpful to take supplementary hydrochloric acid (in the form of "betaine hydrochloride"), digestive enzymes and bile with each meal. Bromelain (the enzyme in fresh pineapple) and papain (the enzyme found in fresh papaya) are very helpful. We suggest eating fresh pineapple and papaya regularly.

6. Bypass your digestive system by adding minerals to your bath or foot bath or rubbing them on your skin. Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) can be added to your bath or foot bath. Magnesium chloride brine from seawater, called "magnesium oil" can be added to your bath or rubbed on your skin. If you have a problem with muscle cramps, try rubbing magnesium oil on the skin over the cramped muscle, or drink some milk of magnesia, or both. Iodine is another important anti-cancer nutrient that will be absorbed through the skin. DMSO is a natural solvent that the body uses as a nutrient. DMSO when rubbed on the skin will carry other nutrients into the body. Another way to bypass the digestive system is sublingual absorption of nutrients. Sublingual vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) tablets, for example, are the best way to absorb this nutrient. Vegetarians and the elderly should supplement with vitamin B12 daily. Vitamin B12 is needed for a healthy nervous system. Many health problems experienced by the elderly are actually due to vitamin B12 deficiency.

7. Blood is a colloidal solution. The overall negative electrical charge (called zeta potential) in the blood is what keeps the cells and nutrients in suspension (like charges repel each other). When the negative electrical charge becomes weak, then particles in blood tend to clump together and fall out of solution. Plaques form on artery walls, in the brain and other places. The blood loses its capacity to carry nutrients. The value of the nutrients you consume is lost if the blood cannot transport them. About half the population has badly sludged blood (the cells have coagulated), and most of the remainder have some degree of sludging. Everyone needs to learn how to maximize their zeta potential and the nutrient carrying capacity of their blood.

One lab found that best results in reducing intravascular coagulation were obtained by drinking 8 glasses per day of reverse osmosis filtered water with a mix of potassium citrate and potassium bicarbonate added sufficient to raise the pH of the water to 8.0 to 8.4. The minerals MUST be taken with the water in order to be effective, because dehydration is also a factor. Potassium works better than sodium to reduce intravascular coagulation, in fact too much sodium in the diet is part of the problem. The lab recommends that everyone replace table salt with a mixture of 60% potassium chloride and 40% sodium chloride to better reflect the potassium/sodium balance found in foods.

The recommendations of this lab are remarkably similar to Dr. Gerson’s cancer therapy which includes drinking one glass of freshly made fruit or vegetable juice (high in potassium) each waking hour of the day supplemented with a 10% potassium solution. This suggests that Dr. Gerson’s therapy strengthens the nutrient carrying capacity of the blood.

To increase your zeta potential you must avoid aluminum. Aluminum is used in water treatment plants to cause materials to settle out of solution. It does this by reducing the zeta potential. In your body aluminum does the same thing. Aluminum is found in municipally treated water, cooking utensils, vaccinations, non-clumping  salt, baking powder, anti-perspirants, antacids, drugs (read the label carefully), soft drinks and other canned goods where the plastic liner has cracked during sealing, and in other unexpected places. A reverse osmosis water filter can remove aluminum from your drinking water. Malic acid removes aluminum from the body. Malic acid is found in apples and apple cider vinegar.

Sodium and calcium decrease zeta potential. Potassium increases zeta potential. The form of potassium that has maximum effect on zeta potential is called potassium citrate. Potassium citrate is available on the Internet. You can read more about zeta potential here. (Editor’s note: Citric acid combines with alkaline minerals to form citrate. Citric acid is readily available in citrus fruits and their juices.)

8. Proper kidney function is essential to good health. All nutrients in the blood are filtered out by the kidneys. Then only nutrients the body wants are re-admitted to the blood through the kidney membrane. This way the body needs to know only what it requires.

Proper functioning of the kidney membrane is needed for nutrients to be available to the body. "The fine filter systems in the kidneys consist of extremely thin lipoid membranes which contain unsaturated fats existing there because, as filters, their surface activity is essential." - Budwig page 16.

Kidneys are damaged by the standard American diet which contains an abundance of unhealthy fats and oils such as hydrogenated oils, oils heated to high temperature, rancid oils, and most of the modern vegetable oils. Particularly helpful to healthy kidney function are coconut oil and flax oil.

Omega 3 essential oil available from flax oil and ground flax seeds is probably the most common dietary deficiency today, and this unsaturated oil is required for proper kidney function. In fact, Dr. Johanna Budwig had good success treating cancer patients with a mixture of flax oil and quark (a kind of cottage cheese).

Also required for proper kidney function is drinking lots of water or fresh juices.

9. A nutrient called DMG (Dimethylglycine) together with supplemental B vitamins (folic acid, B6 and B12) improves oxygen utilization within cells which reduces lactic acid formation, thereby increasing the alkalinity of the body. Supplementing the diet with DMG and B vitamins yields many health benefits including cancer prevention, inhibition of cancer metastases, improved heart health, increased energy, improved oxygenation of the tissues, improved mental functioning, and prevention of many of the damaging effects of aging. DMG and B vitamins are very economical and we recommend this for everyone.

10. There is an intestinal disorder known as celiac disease that disrupts the ability to absorb calcium and vitamin D as well as other nutrients. Many people with osteoporosis actually have celiac disease. Celiac disease is the result of intolerance to the gluten in wheat, barley, oats and rye. Following a gluten-free diet may improve both digestion and bone density. If you are having difficulty increasing your alkalinity, you might try a gluten-free diet for a few weeks or months to see if it helps. Gluten-free grains include brown rice, wild rice, amaranth, quinoa, and buckwheat.

11. Unhealthy intestinal bacteria and yeasts excrete lactic acid and other organic acids that are absorbed by the body and turn the blood acidic. This situation is often associated with inflamed and swollen intestines that are less able to absorb nutrients. People who are unable to alkalize their body using steps one to four above may be helped by the Specific Carbohydrate Diet that denies unhealthy intestinal flora and fauna the undigested carbohydrates that they eat. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is explained in the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall.

12. Populations of bacteria, fungi, etc. may be thriving throughout your body without causing acute disease, yet producing copious acid waste products. These stealth infections may underlie a variety of degenerative conditions. Bacteria are found in arthritic joints, arterial plaque, and many other places. Reducing these populations by strengthening your immune systemhyperthermiaexercise,meditation, electro-medicine and other means can help alkalize your body and free up immune system resources to fight cancer.

Osteoporosis Drugs Backfire

Women taking bisphosphonate osteoporosis drugs (such as Fosamax) for over five years are experiencing severe fractures with little or no provocation. Since these drugs accumulate in the bones, even stopping taking the drugs will not prevent problems from occurring in millions of women.

These drugs interfere with the natural process of bone destruction and rebuilding. During weight bearing exercise, tiny cracks appear in the bone. The natural process of bone repair involves dissolving the damaged bone and rebuilding it stronger than before.

By preventing the destruction of bone, the drugs produce an increase in bone density at the expense of non-repair of cracks. In time the cracks accumulate, eventually resulting in fractures with little or no provocation.

5 Acidic Fatigue Factors That Lead To Stage 1 Acidosis

By Dr Robert O. Young

If you’re getting six to eight hours of sleep at night and you still have to drag yourself through eight seemingly endless hours of work during the day, it’s time for a fatigue check-up. Here are five acidic fatigue factors you might want to consider:

Acidic Fatigue Factor #1: Acid Blood or Anemia or I Eat Too Much Sugar and Animal Protein Dis-Ease.

You may be bleeding internally and not know it – bleeding ulcers, for instance, may be slowly dragging you down. Kidney dis-ease can also be the result of acidic blood or anemia. In women, acid caused fibroid tumors or acid uterine polyps can be the culprit. Blood loss can lead to a deficiency of hemoglobin, the alkalizing protein in the blood that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. The end result when your organs and tissues don’t get enough alkalizing oxygen is fatigue. Other tell-tale acidic symptoms are irritability, dizziness, and feeling cold. A simple live blood test can show acidic blood anemia, and fatigue or Stage 1 acidosis begins to diminish after only a month of alkalizing and energizing with the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet.

Acidic Fatigue Factor #2: Hypothyroidism or I Eat Too Much Crap Dis-ese.

If you are depressed, sluggish, and generally run-down, you may have an under-active acidic thyroid due to an acidic lifestyle and diet. The thyroid is a tiny gland with a big job; it sits at the base of your neck and regulates the speed at which your whole body operates and manages its alkaline design and acidic functions. While hypothyroidism affects both men and women, by age sixty, 17 percent of all women will have a thyroid disorder and not know it, according to the American Thyroid Foundation. A live and dried blood test can show it, and an alkaline lifestyle and diet can chase fatigue and an under-active acidic thyroid away.

Fatigue Factor #3: Caffeine Acid Overload or I Drink Too Much Acid Dis-Ease.

The hard core acid caffeine is everywhere these days, from fancy coffee drinks to so-called “energy” drinks. Too much of a acid thing, though, can drag you down instead of giving you a boost. “In some patients, continued abuse results in fatigue,” says W. Stephen Pray, PhD, RPh. Cut out all acidic caffeine that is causing your fatigue, and keep in mind that caffeine is found in other highly acidic foods such as chocolate, black tea, green tea, energy drinks, and also in many medications.

Fatigue Factor #4: Food Allergies or I Eat and Drink Acid Dis-Ease,

Acidic food allergies or intolerances can cause acidic symptoms from headaches to hives, but the first symptom is often drowsiness or fatigue within ten to thirty minutes of digesting the acidic food or drink. Common offenders are milk, yogurt, ice cream, cheese, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, shellfish, and all forms of sugar. If you suspect an acidic food or drink intolerance, try an “acid elimination diet” that cuts out all acidic foods and drinks for a week or so. You will find that you will no longer have food allergies. Continued digesting of an acidic food or drink your body can’t tolerate can lead not only to chronic fatigue but other health problems as well.

Fatigue Factor #5: Sleep Apnea or I Am Full of Acid Dis-Ease.

You may only think you’re getting six to eight hours of sleep. You may actually stop breathing many times during the night, which awakens you just long enough to disturb your sleep, usually without your being aware of it. If you sleep alone, your only clue that you may have sleep apnea is chronic acid fatigue. If you share a bed with someone, snoring is also an acidic symptom. (They’ll let you know!) A sleep clinic can diagnose sleep apnea, and an alkaline lifestyle and diet can often get you back on the road to restful nights. If you don’t stop the acid lifestyle and diet, an increased risk of stroke or heart attack is down the road instead of an alkaline peaceful sleep.

All five factors are symptoms of the first stage of latent tissue acidosis – enervation – and can easily be resolved with an alkaline lifestyle and diet.

Stay Young and Healthy with Alkaline Water

Stay Young and Healthy By Drinking The Right Water

A dry skin is one of the signs of an aging body. As we get old, skin lose sebum, and in turn, lose moisture. Drinking plenty of water is imperative for someone who wants to slow down the signs of aging such as dry skin. Any doctor would say we have to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. But most of them did not mention what kind of water we should drink. And I guess we ought to know.

What Does Water Do

Water cleanses our body. It promotes the efficiency of blood circulation to help expel the toxins out of the body. Water aids the body in swilling out waste from particular cells, keeping them in good state. While it carries away toxins from the skin, water also transports necessary vitamins and minerals into individual cells.

The Need To Rehydrate Your Skin

Water comprises 70% of our body. Skin, being the largest organ, has a lot of water in it. But the body consumes and expels lots of water in a day. Because of this, our skin needs regular rehydration. The most powerful moisturizers are not enough to take the place of the element that comprises our body most. Not enough rehydration causes the skin to look dry, tough, and old.

Getting Old

We get older since we are not flushing out of all the generated wastes within our body allowing these toxins and impurities to mount up within our body. For our body to operate and to maintain its temperature, we consume nutrients inside our cells. The chief ingredients of all foods, real or junk, plant or animal, alkaline or acid, costly or not, are proteins, fats or carbohydrates. And these are nothing but the amalgamations of these elements: oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen.

After undergoing the digestive and circulatory processes, these nutrients will be oxidized in the cellular level. After this, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen will all turn into organic acids: fatty acids, ammonia, uric acids, etc.

These acidic rubbishes are expelled in the form of urine or sweat after having undergone some processes in the blood. Regrettably, as a result of our lifestyles (i.e., too much stress, not getting enough sleep, not enough workout, too much ingestion, smoking, etc.), the body can’t rinse out all those acidic wastes produced in our body. These waste products build up in an area in our body. What’s worse is that we don’t consume enough fruits and vegetables which are alkaline foods. We get old by this process.

The Right Water

To reverse aging caused by acidic waste products, we should drink alkaline water. Acid free alkaline water or microwater is created by cleaning a tap water (typically with a pH of 7), and letting it go through an electroanalysis chamber. Alkaline and acid minerals found in a tap water is split b a device called water ionizer. The system would release water with a pH of 9 (alkaline) and another set with a pH of 5 (acidic).

Drinking alkaline water is one of the most helpful and trouble-free ways to flush toxins and delay the process of aging. Its effectively lies in the fact that it penetrates deeper than ordinary water. There, it dissolves and transports wastes out of the body.

Alkaline water is more than twice as effective as ordinary tap water. In fact, the effectivity of three glasses of alkaline water is greater than six glasses of a regular one. With this alkaline water, 4 glasses is enough to suffice your daily water need, and delay aging, in turn.

Peer Reviewed Articles on Alkaline Water

Research on the need for maintaing the body’s acid/alkaline balance is now beginning to surface in the West. In Japan there is a large body of scientific evidence from the last 20+ years as to the importance of body pH to good health and wellbeing, and the challenges our bodies face in keeping it in balance, and now in the USA independent researchers are making some significant discoveries.

Here is a selected list of some of the peer-reviewed articles.

1. Lonergan, E. Aging and the kidney: adjusting treatment to physiologic change, Geriatrics 43: 27-30, 32-33, 1998.

Changes in renal physiology and function with aging put the elderly patient at risk for adverse effect of drug therapies due to the incidence of common problems like metabolic acidosis.

2. Frassetto, L. and Sebastian, A. Age and systemic acid-base equilibrium: analysis of published data, Journal of Gerontology, Advanced Biological Science and Medical Science, 51: B91-99, 1996.

Authors examined peer-reviewed literature to determine whether systemic acid-base equilibrium changes with aging in normal adults humans. Using linear regression analysis, they found that with increasing age, there is a significant increase in the steady-state blood H+ indicating a progressively worsening low-level metabolic acidosis in what may reflect, in part, the normal decline of renal function with increasing age.

3. Alpern, R. and Sakhaee, K. The clinical spectrum of chronic metabolic acidosis: homeostatic mechanisms produce significant morbidity, American Journal of Kidney Disease 29: 291-302, 1997.

Chronic metabolic acidosis is a process whereby an excess acid load is placed on the body due to excess acid generation or diminished acid removal by normal homeostatic mechanisms. Excessive meat ingestion and aging are two clinical conditions often associated with chronic metabolic acidosis. The body’s homeostatic response to this pathology is very efficient. Therefore, the blood pH is frequently maintained within the "normal" range. However, these homeostatic responses engender pathologic consequences such as nephrolithiasis, bone demineralization, muscle protein breakdown and renal growth.

4. Bushinsky, D. Acid-base imbalance and the skeleton, European Journal of Nutrition 40: 238-244, 2001.

Humans generally consume a diet that generates metabolic acids leading to a reduction in the systemic bicarbonate and a fall of pH. Chronic metabolic acidosis alters bone cell function; there is an increase in osteoclastic bone resorption and a decrease in osteoblastic bone formation. As we age, we are less able to excrete metabolic acids due to the normal decline in renal function.

5. Frassetto, L.; Morris, R.; Sellmeyer, D.; Todd, K. and Sebastian, A. Diet, evolution and aging: the pathophysiologic effects of the post-agricultural inversion of the potassium-to-sodium and base-to-chloride ratios in the human diet, European Journal of Nutrition 40:5 200-213, 2001.

Dietary changes over the last two centuries have resulted in a mismatch between genetically-determined nutritional requirements in humans. Excess sodium chloride, a deficiency of potassium and excess dietary acids that are not mediated by dietary bicarbonates lead to chronic low-grade metabolic acidosis that amplifies the age-related pathophysiological consequences in humans (such as loss of bone substance, increase in urinary calcium, disturbance in nitrogen metabolism, and low levels of growth hormone).

6. Frassetto, L.; Morris, R. and Sebastian, A. Effect of age on blood acid-base composition in adult humans: role of age-related renal functional decline, American Journal of Physiology, 271: 1114-22, 1996.

Otherwise healthy adults manifest a low-grade, diet-dependent metabolic acidosis, the severity of which increases with age at constant rate described by an index of endogenous acid production, apparently due in part, to the normal age-related decline of renal function.

7. Alpern, R. Trade-offs in the adaptation to acidosis, Kidney International 47: 1205-1215, 1995.

Excessive dietary intake of protein with consequent increase in metabolic acid production result in compensatory mechanisms that lead to progression of kidney stones, bone disease, renal disease and a catabolic state.

8. Krapt, R. and Jehle, A. Renal function and renal disease in the elderly, Schweizerische Medizinische Wochenschrift, 130:11 398-408 2000.

Age-induced decline in renal functions explains, at least in part, clinically important age-related conditions including metabolic acidosis.

9. Adrogue, H. and Madias, N. Management of life-threatening acid-base disorders, New England Journal of Medicine 338: 26-34, 1998.

Acid-base homeostasis exerts a major influence on protein function, thereby critically affecting tissue and organ performance. Deviations in body acidity can have adverse consequences and when severe, can be life-threatening.

10. Maurer, M.; Riesen, W.; Muser, J.; Hulter, H. and Krapf, R. Neutralization of Western diet inhibits bone resportion independently of K intake and reduces cortisol secretion in humans, American Journal of Physiology and Renal Physiology 284: F32-40, 2003.

The acid load inherent in the Western diet results in mild chronic metabolic acidosis in association with a state of cortisol excess. An alkali balanced diet modulates bone resorption and the associated alterations in calcium and phosphate homeostasis.

11. May, R.; Kelly, R. and Mitch, W. Metabolic acidosis stimulates protein degradation in rat muscle by glucocorticoid-dependent mechanism, Journal of Clinical Investigations 77:614-621, 1986.

Chronic metabolic acidosis increases net muscle protein degradation in rat muscle tissue.

12. Meghji, S.; Morrison, M.; Henderson, B. and Arnett, T. pH dependence of bone resoption: mouse calvarial osteoclasts are activated by acidosis, American Journal of Physiological and Endocrinological Metabolism 280: E112-E119, 2001.

Osteoclast activity is modulated by small pH changes and is a key determinant of bone resorption in mouse calvarial cultures.

13. Nabata, T.; Morimoto, S. and Ogihara, T. Abnormalities in acid-base balance in the elderly, Nippon Rinsho 50: 2249-53, 1992.

Decline in the ability to adjust acid-base balance is a feature of aging. Regulation of pH ultimately depends on the kidneys and lungs, however, the ability of these organs is decreased with physiological aging. Renal insufficiency and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and various drugs, such as diuretics, often affect the acid-base balance in the elderly.

14. Robergs, R. Exercise-induced metabolic acidosis: where do the protons come from?, Sport Science 5(2) sportsci.org/jour/0102/rar.thm, 2001.

The physiology of intense exercise that produces acidosis is far more complex than originally thought. In the transition to higher exercise intensity, proton release is even greater than lactate production which indicates acidosis is only partially related to production of "lactic acid."

15. Sebastian, A.; Harris, S.; Ottaway, J.; Todd, K. and Morris, R. Improved mineral balance and skeletal metabolism in postmenopausal women treated with potassium bicarbonate, New England Journal of Medicine 330:25 1776-81 1994.

Endogenous acid produced by the metabolism of foods in ordinary diets abundant in proteins may contribute to the decrease in bone mass that occurs normally with aging. The oral administration of potassium bicarbonate at a dose sufficient to neutralize endogenous acid improves calcium and phosphorus balance, reduces bone resorption and creases the rate of bone formation.

16. Sebastian, A.; Frassetto, L.; Sellmeyer, D.; Merriam, R. and Morris, R. Estimation of the net acid load of the diet of ancestral preagricultural Homo sapiens and their hominid ancestors, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 76:6 1308-1316, 2002.

Estimates of the net systemic load of acid in ancestral pre-agricultural diets as compared to contemporary diets reflect a mismatch between the nutrient compositions of the diet and genetically determined nutritional requirements. The result is that contemporary diets generate diet-induced metabolic acidosis in contemporary Homo Sapiens.

Acid is Stored in our Fat Cells – Scientific Study

By Alderin Ordell, MA, based on the IonLife Report :

Dr. Theodore A. Baroody, Alkalize or Die

“The countless names of ill-nesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause … too much tissue acid waste in the body!”

Dr. Robert O. Young, The pH Miracle

“We can heal ourselves by changing the environment inside our bodies. Potentially harmful invaders, then, will have nowhere to grow and will become harmless.”

Storing Acid in our Bodies :

Dr. Lynda Frassetto from the University of California believes that humans, in evolutionary terms, have changed. Once upon a time, our bodies used to break down food and dispose of the acid waste with our kidneys and livers. But now, because of the sheer amount of acid waste the average American produces, she sees our inner bodies being turned into a war zone, where our body is fighting to protect its most strategic reserves — our kidney and liver — from total degradation and failure.

To prove this theory, Dr. Frassetto studied 1000 people and discovered that we are indeed stockpiling acid waste in our fatty deposits instead of eliminating it with our kidneys and liver. Cholesterol and crystallized uric acid are solidified acids that have been dumped within the body for later disposal, which never comes. Our bodies have made the choice to preserve our kidney and liver instead of processing the acid waste.

The cost is tremendous — obesity, low energy, and many acid related diseases such as osteoarthritis, diabetes, cancer, and much more.

When our bodies are excessively acidic, they borrow essential minerals such as calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium from our vital organs and bones to buffer or neutralize the acid. The result is our bodies suffer from prolonged degradation or corrosion which manifests into these dehabilitating conditions.

The reason is simple — the average American diet contains way too much acid. Diet coke and other soda is probably the most acidic food people consume at a pH of 2.5. Beer and meat are at 3.5, then there’s diary, white pasta, most water, wine, hard alcohol, nuts and butters, beans, oils — all acidic foods. All produce acid waste in our bodies that they can‘t handle.

Dr. Robert O. Young agrees with Dr. Frassetto‘s theory. Sugar is an acid and he sees Westerners consumption of sugar as the reason why so many are overweight. The body has to protect itself from the excess sugar, so it creates fat to encase the acid. “Fat,” he says. “Is saving our lives.”

Then there’s the problem of disease. The stomach works by producing acid to break down food. Whenever this acid is made, alkaline buffers are also created and sent through our blood stream, naturally alkalizing our body. A healthy balanced body has alkaline reserves to battle diseases, infections, and viruses. But if excessive acid must be continuously neutralized or stored, our alkaline reserves will be depleted, leaving our bodies weakened and disease prone.

Acid and Stress :
Acid comes from three sources — food, pollution, and stress. Of these three, stress is the greatest problem. One shot of adrenaline can neutralize and acidify an alkaline diet. So stress management as well as diet management is essential to maintaining an alkaline body.

The worst case scenario in which many Westerners fit into is where we work 40-50 hour stressful weeks with hardly any breaks to calm ourselves down. We consume fast food and coffee for quick bursts of artificial energy to just get through our work day. Then we come home to family stresses, household chores, bills, and more and never really relax and give our bodies a chance to neutralize all the acid we produced through stress and from eating very acidic foods.

So acid in our bodies build up until we begin to show symptoms — digestive problems, headaches, overweight, bone pains, elimination issues, muscle tension and pain, heart problems, high blood pressure, and more.

We spend our lives giving ourselves to our jobs and families and never take the time to nourish our bodies, mind, and soul.

More Effects on Acid on our Body :
Acidity is like rust. We have 96,000 kilometers of veins and arteries, all of which are corroded by acid. If nothing is done, acid interrupts all cellular activities and functions — from our beating heart to the way we think.

Acid coagulates blood. Blood also can’t flow around fatty acids so capillaries clog up and die. Our skin begins to wrinkle and isn’t as stretchy. Even if you put out the money for a face lift or liposuction, the acid still remains and will do damage. As for our lungs and other organs, all are involved in the maintenance of correct blood pH so if all have to work harder to deal with excessive acid, all will stop functioning a whole lot sooner than we want them to.

Did you know that if any substance changes from a 7 to an 8 pH, it has become ten times more alkaline? The opposite is also true, if it changes from a 7 pH to a 6, it has become ten times more acidic.

If our blood pH drops from its optimum level of 7.36 pH to 7 pH, you will lapse into a coma and die. This change represents our body becoming four times more acidic than it should be. In this environment, beneficial microforms will die and aggressive microforms sustained by an acidic environment begin to multiply and mutate, becoming parasitic and pathogenic agents. You would die from poisoning from your own blood. Because of this, our organs are totally subservient to blood pH meaning the body will destroy our organs before it lets our blood pH change too much.

Coca Cola gives us such a charge not just from the caffeine but because its 2.5 acidity sets of alarms all over our body and stored alkaline reserves are called in to fight the surge of adrenaline. Coca-cola, is 50,000 times more acidic than neutral water and it takes 32 glasses of neutral pH water to balance one glass of soda! The “high” you experience is your body screaming for help while you enjoy the thrill of its fear.

Dr. Theodore A. Baroody, author of “Alkalize or Die” says, “Too much acidity in the body is like having too little oil in the car. It just grinds to a halt one lazy Sunday afternoon. There you are — stuck. The body does the same thing.”

Your Energy Levels :
Our metabolic process is dependent on balance. Our 75 trillion cells are slightly acidic on the inside, while our outside inner sea should be alkaline. Without this acid/alkaline relationship, no chemical or energy interchange could happen because there isn’t any pH balance. There needs to be polarity between our cells and inner sea or the energy of the cell has difficulty flowing into the surrounding tissues. Thus, we don’t get the energy from the food we eat. In fact if its too acidic, it will make us tired– the opposite process of what we need!
Parasites :
More and more doctors are beginning to understand that disease is caused by an unbalance of nutritional, electrical, structural, toxicological, or biological systems of our body, allowing germs to flourish. Yeast, fungi, viruses, and moulds are all microforms that exist in our bodies. They feed off of glucose, fats, and proteins in our bodies. They deposit their toxic excretions in us, making us even more acidic.

Disease can only be cured when our blood is maintained and a normal, slightly alkaline level, where these germs can‘t thrive. We need to reestablish balance and work with our bodies, not against them.

Mineral Absorption :
People spend a lot of money on supplements each year — and most of it is wasted. The reason is there are many factors that influence which minerals are absorbed by the body and which aren’t.

Every mineral has its own signature pH. When you look at a element chart, those at the lower end can be absorbed at a high range of pH. But those at the higher end like need a much smaller pH range to be absorbed. If you body is not balanced it will reject most minerals.

Iodine, for example, is high on the atomic scale and thus needs near perfect pH for it to be absorbed. Iodine is a requirement for a healthy thyroid. Thyroid deterioration has been linked to arthritis, heart attacks, diabetes, depression, cancer, obesity, and fatigue.

There has also been a depletion of minerals in our agriculture lands, leading to inadequate mineral supply in our diets. Minerals are important because they determine the conductivity of electricity in our bodies. Our nervous system uses electricity to monitor and report on our organs and subsystems. If our bodies aren’t balanced, our nervous system cannot keep accurate information and our organs and subsystems won‘t get what they need to operate correctly.

Mercury and other Heavy Metals :
The more acidic a body is, the more it holds onto heavy metals such as mercury. Heavy metals create a high oxidative stress that acidifies the body, making it even worse. A recent study of Alzheimers disease identifies mercury as the prime suspect for being the cause.

The good news is alkaline water has been shown to have an immediate detoxifying effect on the body. People experience the normalizing of bowel movements and classic detoxification symptoms such as itching, body aches, and head aches as the toxins leave their bodies.

Balancing with Alkaline Water and Food :
To achieve balance, health practitioners recommend an 80/20 mix of alkaline and acidic foods. Problem is, most people don’t like and don’t normally eat enough alkaline food such as spinach, broccoli, and silver beets.

Alkaline water, however, is much easier to adapt to your eating lifestyle. Not only does it help you achieve that 80/20 alkaline to acidic balance, it also hydrates your body as much as three times more effectively than regular water because the water molecule has been reduced. The minerals in the water are negatively charged making them much easier for your body to absorb. Also, alkaline ionized water is full of bound oxygen plus negative hydrogen ions that are nature’s original antioxidant. Then you also have a state of the art nine stage water purifier working for you that will remove 99.9% of most organic and inorganic contaminants.

Just carry your 4 ounce dropper bottle of Real Water Concentrate around and enjoy glass after glass of ionized, alkaline water while you’re at work or school, and drink a glass in the morning and before bed.

If you can drink alkaline ionized water while also eating a sensible diet and incorporating alkalizing activities into your lifestyle such as meditation or prayer, your body will balance.

Sang Wang, scientist, inventer, and drinker of alkaline water for seventeen years says the problem with trying to alkalize with food is that unless you can afford organic, you will metabolize a large amount of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other chemical residue. He adds that if drink too much alkaline water, it will simply pass through the kidneys and flush away any germs that might be there.

In summary, alkaline ionized water is used by millions of Japanese and Korean families and has been a part of their culture since the 1980’s. Alkaline ionized water is found in hospitals, sanitariums, and clinics throughout these countries.

Diabetes and Alkaline Water

Posted by admin
Acid/Alkaline, Diabetes, Water / No Comments

Below is a peer-reviewed scientific study showing a link between decreased risk of diabetes and drinking alkaline, ionized water.
But first some very sobering figures released at end of June, 2008.

Why is it that with all the money we spend on new drugs and medical traeatments, the USA has by far the highest percentage of diabetics in the world?

It is now estimated that nearly 24 Million Have Diabetes and at least 57 million have prediabetes.
That’s according to the CDC’s latest diabetes statistics.

The figures show a steep rise in the number of people with diabetes – up by more than 3 million people in about two years, notes Ann Albright, PhD, RD, director of the CDC’s division of diabetes translation.
There are also now about 186,300 youths younger than 20 with diabetes.

"It’s very important that people understand how serious this disease is and that this growth in this epidemic is very, very concerning, particularly those new cases," Albright says. "We’re hopeful that these data will shine a light and remind people that we must do more in diabetes prevention and control."

Researchers reported last year that type 2 diabetes hastens heart disease and shortens lives by about eight years. Albright says that the main reason is the rise in overweight and obesity - "That is certainly a strong factor in the development of type 2 diabetes," the most common type of diabetes in adults.

And what is the main resson for this rapid rise in overweight and obesity?
Without doubt it is largely due to the high consumption of acidic fast foods and soft drinks. As Dr. Baroody says, your excess fat is saving your life as your body tries to store acidic toxins in fatty tissue away from your vital organs.

Alkaline-reduced water (ARW) is known to exert several anti-cancer effects, as well as to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduce blood-glucose levels. This study was performed in order to determine the effects of ARW on the control of spontaneous diabetes in Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats.

We assigned 16 male OLETF rats (4 wk) to two groups: an experimental group, which was given ARW, and a control group, which received laboratory tap water. From week 6 to 32, the body weight, lipid composition, and glucose levels in the blood of the rats were measured. The glucose levels of both groups tended to increase. However, the ARW group’s glucose levels were significantly lower than those of the control group after 12 weeks (p below 0.05).

The total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the ARW group were found to be significantly lower than those of the control group during the experimental period. These results suggest that ARW spurred the growth of OLETF rats during the growth stage, and that long-term ingestion of ARW resulted in a reduction in the levels of glucose, triglycerides, and total cholesterol in the blood.

Are Water Ionizer Products a Scam?

There is a lot of controversy these days over alkaline water, ionizers, and if they really do what they say they do. I want to produce the opposing view point and comment at the end. Here is a quote from well known Dr Weil (who makes a fantastic living n the internet selling his own products!).

Does Alkaline Water Promote Health? Manufacturers of water ionizers state that their products produce more alkaline water, which allows your body to better absorb minerals and antioxidants from water. Are these health claims real? Do you recommend ionizers?

Home water ionizers, which I’ve seen offered for sale on the internet, are just the latest twist in the ongoing effort to promote the notion that alkaline water is somehow protective of your health. The underlying idea is that you can prevent disease by balancing your body’s pH. Promoters claim that alkaline water is energizing, hydrates the body more effectively than regular water, improves the taste of food when used in cooking, promotes "regularity," helps the body absorb nutrients more effectively, and on and on. I’ve even seen claims that it can cure everything from obesity and high blood pressure to breast cancer.

None of these claims are true. Furthermore, your body needs absolutely no help in adjusting its pH. Normally, the pH of blood and most body fluids is near seven, which is close to neutral. This is under very tight biological control because all of the chemical reactions that maintain life depend on it. Unless you have serious respiratory or kidney problems, body pH will remain in balance no matter what you eat or drink. As for water, you should consider the fact that alkaline water is common throughout the western states but to my knowledge it has not protected anyone from the diseases and disorders that occur elsewhere in the U.S.

The health claims for water ionizers and for alkaline water are bogus. Save your money.

Andrew Weil, M.D.

So are health claims for ionizers and alkaline water bogus? Dr Weil doesn’t give a reason for stating that health benefits are bogus so it is difficult to address his assertion.

I can, however, address the "your body needs no help adjusting its pH" claim.

Let us look at this rationally. Your body DOES have an intricate system that maintains the internal pH of your body. What happens if you continuously stress that system?

We already know that there is acidity in our outside environment. (Think Acid Rain) Acid rain is caused from chemicals, pollutants and a number of other materials both manmade and natural (volcanic ash). The air we breath is acidic for the same reasons. The food we eat (processed and pesticide/herbicide treated) are often acidic.

So we breathe, eat and drink compounds that are already acidic or create acidity once in our bodies. Our body must work very very hard to combat these toxins and poisons and it is not adapted to that through evolution yet. When it gets overcome with poisons (which cause acidity) then disease occurs. Now what about in the meantime… before our body shows signs of over toxicity by way of disease, our body is working overtime to maintain a pH of around 7. It has a number of controls (buffers) that allow it to do this.

Do you think that if you removed some of the exposures to acid inducing pollutants, detoxified the body of heavy metals and toxins, and drank alkaline, oxygenated water instead of acid rain… do you think that there would be LESS burden on this delicate buffering system. IF there was less burden on this buffering system, does it make sense that it would last longer and continue to be able to maintain a safe and healthy pH?

To say that this system needs no help to maintain body pH is ludicrous. DEATH occurs when this system fails without help. This is a typical doctor answer though. I mean the body has a very intricate system of maintaining blood sugar too doesn’t it? UNTIL it fails… and then diabetes results. But you can help THAT system and even prevent diabetes type 2. ALL body systems can be ‘helped’ to prevent overload and reduce stress on the system, thus giving the system longer life. But if Dr Weil wants us to continue drinking acid rain, it certainly does help him sell his supplements and gives him people to write prescriptions for.

I believe  alkaline, ionized real water –  is a MUCH healthier alternative to drinking Acid Rain. Does Dr Weil REALLY disagree with that? How could he?

Ray Kurzweil and Alkaline Water

Ray Kurzweil was inducted in 2002 into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, established by the U.S. Patent Office.

He received the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize, the nation’s largest award in invention and innovation. He also received the 1999 National Medal of Technology, the United States’ highest honor in technology, from President Clinton in a White House ceremony.

He has also received scores of other national and international awards, including the 1994 Dickson Prize (Carnegie Mellon University’s top science prize), Engineer of the Year from Design News, Inventor of the Year from MIT, and the Grace Murray Hopper Award from the Association for Computing Machinery. He has received twelve honorary Doctorates and honors from three presidents.

He has received seven national and international film awards. Ray’s books include "The Age of Intelligent Machines", "The Age of Spiritual Machines", and "Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever". Four of Ray’s books have been national best sellers and "The Age of Spiritual Machines" has been translated into 9 languages and was the #1 best selling book on Amazon in science.

Question: I have read on the Internet that it is not possible to create alkaline or acid water from pure water and that water that is pure enough to drink can’t be split into alkaline and acid components. Is this true?

As responsible scientists, we had the same skepticism when we first heard about alkaline water.

Therefore, the first thing we did was to purchase a water alkalinizer as well as an accurate electronic pH meter. We ran tap water with pH 7.1 from our home faucet into the device and found that the water coming out of the alkaline outlet had a pH of 9.5 (indicating very alkaline), while the water from the acid outlet measured pH 4.5 (indicating very acidic).

We repeated this experiment with a variety of tap waters obtaining alkaline outputs with a pH ranging from 9.5 to 9.9. It is true that "pure" or distilled water can not be ionized. If you were to try to "split" distilled water, it would not work. Tap or spring water, however, has dissolved minerals in it. It’s the minerals in the water; primarily calcium, potassium and magnesium that allow water to be "split" by an electric current into alkaline, "electron-rich" (i.e., containing negatively charged ions that can engage in chemical reactions to provide electrons to positively charged free radicals) and acid, "electron-deficient" components. Individuals who say it is not possible to split tap or spring water are misinformed."

Question: One site on the Internet states "Ionized water is nothing more than sales fiction; the term is meaningless to chemists. Most water that is fit for drinking is too unconductive to undergo significant electrolysis."

RK: "The above statement is easily shown to be incorrect with a simple pH meter and an electrolysis machine. Most tap waters run through the machine produce highly alkaline water as measured by a pH meter."

Question: Since you advocate drinking alkaline water, why not simply mix something like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) with water and drink that? There are, in fact, alkaline waters sold that are made by mixing water with bicarbonate. Wouldn’t that work as well and be much less expensive than a water alkalinizer?

>RK: "There are more benefits to "alkaline water" than simply the alkalinity or pH. The most important feature of alkaline water produced by a water alkalinizer is its oxidation reduction potential (ORP). Water with a high negative ORP is of particular value in its ability to neutralize oxygen free radicals.

ORP can also be directly tested using an ORP sensor and meter. We have conducted these experiments as well. We found that water coming directly from the tap had an ORP of +290mV, while the water coming out of the water alkalinizer had a negative ORP. The more negative the ORP of a substance (that is, the higher its negative ORP), the more likely it is to engage in chemical reactions that donate electrons. These electrons are immediately available to engage in reactions that neutralize positively charged free radicals. This is the key benefit of water produced by a water alkalinizer that is not available by simply drinking water than has had some bicarb or other compounds dissolved in it to make it alkaline.

Although water mixed with bicarbonate is indeed alkaline, it does not have a negative ORP; rather it has a positive ORP, meaning that it is unable to neutralize dangerous oxygen free radicals. Alkaline water produced by running tap water through an electrolysis machine does have a high negative ORP, meaning that it does have the ability to neutralize oxygen free radicals. We have confirmed these ORP measurements through our direct tests."

Question: OK, why is it important to drink alkaline water with a high negative ORP?

RK: "All chemical reactions occur with the transfer of electrons. Negatively charged entities are said to be reducing agents, meaning they are relatively electron rich and are able to donate electrons, reducing the charge of the entity with which they react. Relatively electron-poor entities are referred to as oxidizing agents, meaning they tend
to pull electrons away. Thus, each substance in our body may act as either an oxidizing or reducing agent.

However, not just any negatively charged ion will be able to engage in the specific chemical reactions needed to neutralize oxygen free radicals. The HCO3- (bicarbonate) ions in alkaline bicarb water do not have this potential, whereas the OH- and mineral-rich water coming from an electrolysis machine (from tap water) does have this potential. That is implied in the negative value of the "oxidation reduction potential."

Free radicals are among the most damaging molecules in the body and are highly unstable molecules that are oxidizing agents and are electron deficient. They are a principal cause of damage and disease in the body. Oxygen free radicals contribute significantly to a broad variety of harmful conditions in the body ranging from life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, stroke and cancer, to less severe conditions such as sunburns, arthritis, cataracts, and many others. Free radicals MUST get electrons from somewhere and will steal them from whatever molecules are around, including normal, healthy tissues.

Damage to tissues results when free radicals strip these electrons from healthy cells. If the damage goes on unchecked, this will lead to disease. For example, the oxidation of LDL cholesterol particles in arterial walls by free radicals triggers an immune system response that results in atherosclerosis, the principal cause of heart disease. The negative ions in alkaline water from an electrolysis machine are a rich source of electrons that can be donated to these free radicals in the body, neutralizing them and stopping them from damaging healthy tissues.
Specifically, these ions have the potential to engage in the chemical reactions necessary to neutralize oxygen free radicals.

Vitamin C and E, grape seed extract and alpha lipoic acid, for example, are all powerful electron donors. The vegetable-rich diet we recommend is alkaline and helps donate electrons to the body. Alkaline, electron-rich water falls in the same category. It can help with your body’s need for electrons to counteract free radicals.

Interestingly, we also tested vegetable juice with the ORP meter and found that it also has a high negative ORP, meaning that it is able to neutralize oxygen free radicals. So at least one of the important benefits of eating vegetables can be obtained from drinking the high negative ORP alkaline water from an electrolysis machine.

Another benefit of drinking alkaline water is that it assists in the absorption of minerals. We know that if the body is not absorbing enough minerals, it will rob minerals from the body’s mineral reserves, chiefly calcium from the bones.

It is well known that many chronic diseases result in excess acidity of the body (metabolic acidosis). We also know that the body tends to become more acidic due to modern dietary habits and lifestyles and the aging process itself. By drinking high negative ORP alkaline water, you combat metabolic acidosis and improve absorption of nutrients.

The blood is carefully buffered to keep it in a narrow range between pH 7.35 to 7.45. The body keeps blood pH stable by utilizing alkaline buffers, chiefly bicarbonate, to neutralize acidic liquids (such as colas, which have a pH as low as 2.5) and other acidic products and byproducts. But as the blood stream
receives these acidic substances, the alkaline buffers get used up.

Drinking alkaline water helps reduce the burden on the limited alkaline buffers which are needed for the body’s natural detoxification processes."

Question: Is there research that actually shows the benefits of drinking alkaline water?

RK: "A number of studies are summarized]. One study suggests that alkaline water encourages "friendly" anaerobic microflora in the human intestinal tract, and discourages "unfriendly" aerobic organisms. The researcher writes: "Many diseases of the intestine are due to a disturbance in the balance of the microorganisms inhabiting the gut. The treatment of such diseases involves the restoration of the quantity and/or balance of residential microflora in the intestinal tract. It is known that aerobes and anaerobes grow at different oxidation-reduction potentials (ORP). The former require positive E(h) values up to +400 mV. Anaerobes do not grow unless the E(h) value is negative between -300 and -400 mV. In this work, it is suggested that prerequisite for the recovery and maintenance of obligatory anaerobic microflora in the intestinal tract is a negative ORP value of the intestinal milieu. Electrolyzed reducing water with E(h) values between 0 and -300 mV produced in electrolysis devices possesses this property. Drinking such water favours the growth of residential microflora in the gut. A sufficient array of data confirms this idea."

Dr. Grossman has also had many of his patients report of health benefits they have experienced from drinking alkaline electron-rich water."

Question: How can alkaline water with a pH of 9 or 10 be expected to affect the body when the pH of the stomach is 2 or less?

RK: "It is important to remember that large amounts of hydrochloric acid are present in the stomach primarily when food is there. There is only a small amount of acid in stomach when it is empty, and this can be easily overcome when alkaline electron-rich water is consumed. Therefore, in order to gain maximum benefit, we recommend drinking alkaline water in between meals. Water consumed between meals will very quickly pass through the stomach and the GI tract."

Ray Kurzweil and Anti-aging

Futurist Ray Kurzweil

On Building Bridges Toward ImmortalityBy Jon VanZile

Ray Kurzweil is at war. A healthy 57-year-old who can rattle off streams of his own vital statistics, Kurzweil believes that humanity is standing on the brink of immortality—and all that is holding us back is our own evolutionary biology.

Thus Kurzweil fights a war against a protein-based machine—the human body—whose basic design is about to become obsolete. He figures he needs only to hold off disease and aging long enough, maybe 20 more years, to reap the rewards of a revolution in health technology that will rely on advanced gene therapy and robots the size of blood cells to grant life everlasting.

While his ideas might seem far-fetched, he points out that space flight and mass agriculture would have been inconceivable to earlier generations. Instead of believing in doubt, Kurzweil has chosen to believe in the future, and he backs up his vision with sound science and impressive credentials.

Ray Kurzweil

As a teenager, Kurzweil attracted attention for writing a computer program that composed piano music. After attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he went on to a lucrative career as an inventor. His inventions, which include an optical character recognition program and a text-to-speech voice synthesizer, earned him the government’s National Medal of Technology and the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize, the nation’s largest award for invention.

More recently, however, Kurzweil has turned his attention to two favorite subjects: health and technological innovation. His interest in both subjects has very personal roots. “In my mid-thirties, I was diagnosed with type II diabetes,” he recalls. “Because my father died early of heart disease, I also had a disposition for high cholesterol. I followed the conventional treatment for a while, but it really made things worse and caused me to gain weight.”

Gaining weight and unhappy, Kurzweil decided to approach the problem like an inventor, as “someone who could find a solution to the problem.” He immersed himself in the scientific literature and soon designed a health program, based on diet modification and nutritional supplementation, that reversed his diabetes without medical intervention. This program became the subject of a bestselling book, The Ten Percent Solution for a Healthy Life, published in 1994.

Since then, Kurzweil has taken his theories even further. With the rate of technological innovation increasing exponentially, he believes it is only a matter of years—decades at most—until futuristic technologies will entirely reverse-engineer the human machine. “We’re beginning to understand biology and health, disease and aging, as information processes,” he explains. “We’re learning very precisely the sequences of steps concerning genes, proteins, and enzymes—and the sharing of information from one biochemical step to the next—that underlie aging and disease.”

Terry Grossman, MD

The trick, Kurzweil says, is to live long enough for scientists to unlock the biological riddle of aging. To do that, he advises people to use every weapon at their disposal to defy aging. These weapons include the most sophisticated, up-to-the-minute health information available and extensive dietary supplementation to replace nutrients lost to the aging process.

Kurzweil himself takes 250 supplements every day, while closely tracking and monitoring about 50 different measures of his own health. At any given time, he knows his exact levels of cholesterol, HDL (high-density lipoprotein), LDL (low-density lipoprotein), triglycerides, homocysteine, and C-reactive protein, as well as his blood concentrations of various antioxidants and nutrients. “I haven’t aged much in the last 15 years,” he says.

His program is presented in Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever, a new book he coauthored with Terry Grossman, MD. According to Kurzweil, “Radical life extension is close at hand.”

Bridges to the Future

To make their theories easier to understand, Kurzweil and Grossman have developed three “bridges,” each of which must be crossed before humanity reaches immortality.

The first bridge is classic life extension, based on the most advanced science available today. It draws on much of the same science reported each month in Life Extension magazine. In fact, Kurzweil is a regular reader of Life Extension and supports the Foundation’s products.

“Bridge One involves learning about how the body’s different systems work,” Kurzweil explains. “Insulin resistance . . . methylation . . . atherosclerosis . . . cancer. They say that aging and disease are 80% genes and 20% lifestyle. That’s only true if you follow the usual, watered-down, compromised approach. If you’re aggressive, you can overcome almost any genetic disposition.

“Atherosclerosis is the perfect example. Only 25 years ago, scientists had only a rudimentary understanding of heart disease. Today, however, we understand atherosclerosis as an inflammatory condition that may begin in childhood and can be treated and even reversed through healthy lifestyle decisions, including frequent exercise, dietary choices that reduce inflammation, and aggressive supplementation with nutrients that reduce cholesterol.

“A lot of people feel that they shouldn’t take a supplement or medication unless it’s a last resort. That’s not the case. Evolution is not on our side. We need to aggressively reprogram our biochemistry, and that’s what my program does.” Because every person’s biology is different, Kurzweil’s program is individualized, but based on concepts that will be familiar to readers of Life Extension. Following are some of the program’s key recommendations.

You are what you drink

The human body comprises various fluids, ranging in pH from very acidic (stomach acid, for example) to rather alkaline (pancreatic fluid), and many bodily fluids have very narrow parameters. For example, the fluid within our cells ranges in pH from 6.8 to 7.1, while blood pH exists in a very narrow, slightly alkaline band of between 7.35 and 7.45.

Any disruption to this careful pH balance is dangerous. Unfortunately, it is easy for the body’s fluids to become too acidic, because many metabolic processes produce acidic by-products. According to Kurzweil, good health depends on maintaining a slightly alkaline pH level, so he recommends avoiding acidic beverages such as soft drinks and drinking purified water that has been treated to adjust its pH level. This promotes powerful detoxification and health-promoting effects, says Kurzweil.

Reduce your glycemic load

This concept is receiving more attention as scientists continue to unravel the relationships between blood sugar, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, conditions that have one thing in common: excess carbohydrate intake. Kurzweil recommends dramatically reducing carbohydrate intake, especially for those with type II diabetes or insulin resistance.

Not all carbohydrates are equal, however. Simple carbohydrates, such as refined sugar, cause a rapid elevation in blood sugar, thus provoking an insulin response as the body produces extra insulin to bring the blood sugar level down. Over time, the body’s system for controlling blood sugar breaks down and diabetes develops. Diabetes and heart disease are closely associated. To prevent this vicious cycle, Kurzweil recommends that people avoid simple carbohydrates, opting instead for foods with a lower glycemic load. The glycemic load is calculated by multiplying the number of grams of carbohydrates in a given food by its glycemic index (which measures how quickly the food is converted into glucose and released into the bloodstream). The glycemic load is an accurate measure of how much insulin your body will have to produce to neutralize the carbohydrates in a given food.

Carbohydrates with a low glycemic load include peanuts, carrots, lentils, and kidney beans. By contrast, carbohydrates with a high glycemic load include all candy and refined sugar, white rice, potatoes, pasta, and white bread.

Carbohydrates should account for no more than one third of total caloric intake, says Kurzweil. People with diabetes or insulin resistance should limit their carbohydrate intake even further.

Choose your fats wisely

It is well known that Americans eat too much fat, but only recently have many people begun to pay attention to the kinds of fat they eat.

In Kurzweil’s view, fat itself is an outdated form of energy storage in humans, one that made sense when calories were scarce, hunting was uncertain, and winters were long. In today’s era of abundance, however, fat storage is yet another example of biology sabotaging our well-being.

Kurzweil’s program admonishes people to stay away from unhealthy saturated and trans fats, but also recommends that we pay more attention to the kind of healthy, unsaturated fats we eat, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty acids, found in plant-based oils, and omega-3 fatty acids, abundant in sources such as fish, walnuts, and flaxseed, are both unsaturated fats, though they act very differently in the body. Omega-6 fatty acids encourage inflammation, while omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory. Inflammation has been linked to a host of degenerative conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and arthritis.

The modern American diet, which typically is high in processed plant oils, encourages consumption of far too much pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids. The Kurzweil program recommends high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, such as ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eico-sapentaenoic acid), and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). EPA and DHA especially have been shown to lower triglyceride levels dramatically.

At the same time, Kurzweil’s program recommends incorporating certain omega-6 fatty acids such as GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) in the diet to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart attack and stroke risk. Another healthy omega-6 fatty acid is DGLA (dihomogamma-linolenic acid).

Kurzweil recommends that fat make up no more than 25% of daily caloric intake, and that virtually all of this should be in the form of healthy fats. Saturated fats should account for no more than 3% of total calories.

Why Alkaline Water is Healthy Water

 Alkaline Water

I’ve only vaguely understood the importance of pH balance is for the body. As it turns out, the body should be more alkaline than acidic. Well that is the lay person’s explanation of a much more complex maintenance system that exists in our bodies. Our body has a complicated system of buffers that act to maintain a body pH. If our intake or oxygen levels threaten to increase the acidity of the blood, the body kicks in and the end result is an excretion of excess acid in the urine. The opposite is true as well. Over alkalinity is not a state our body likes to be in.

Our body strives to maintain a slightly alkaline state. This is why pH strips that measure acidity and alkalinity of our urine are an effective way to gauge what our body state is. Excesses in acidity will be excreted in the urine. Excess alkalinity will also be reflected in urine pH.

Acid-Alkaline Balance

Proper Health starts with the correct acid-alkaline balance in your body. The pH level (acid – alkaline measurement) of our internal fluids affects every cell in our bodies. Extended acid imbalances of any kind can overwhelm your body, and lead to health complications.

Just as the body regulates its temperature in a rigid manner, so will it manage to preserve a very narrow pH range – especially in the blood. As a matter of fact, the body will go to such great lengths to maintain a blood pH of 7.365 that it will even create stress on other tissues, body systems, and organs to do so. Chronic acidity will interrupt all cellular activities and functions – it interferes with life itself.

When the pH of the body gets out of balance (too acidic), we may experience low energy, fatigue, excess weight, poor digestion, aches and pains, and even more serious disorders.

The cycle of acidity begins primarily as a result of three things:

1. Ingesting acids. Eating too many acidifying foods like processed sugar, meats, dairy, coffee, alcohol, etc. Create an acid ash in the body. These acids can overload the body’s ability to neutralize them.

2. Creation of acids. Pathogens and microforms create acidifying toxins in the body. As the body becomes more and more acidic, bad bacteria, yeasts and other microforms proliferate in the body. Since these organisms are living, they eat as well as create resulting toxins. These toxins are often very acidifying.

3. Improper elimination of acids. Not all acids are the same; some are weak and some are strong. Weak acids like citric acid are much easier to neutralize than strong acids like uric acid. The body uses many systems in order to buffer acids including breath, mineral reserves, and fat. When the body’s buffering systems become compromised, excess acids build up.

The process of re-establishing  acid-alkaline balance begins with proper diet and nutrition. This includes eating alkalizing foods (vegetables, low sugar fruits, etc.), super hydration (drinking plenty of alkaline water that is ionic and structured), and proper supplementation.

pH Balance begins with super hydration

Water is the most crucial factor in establishing and maintaining proper acid-alkaline balance. Since your body is 70% water, it is extremely important to constantly replenish your supply of it. The body loses 2.5 liters of water every day just through normal bodily functions. The quality of the water that you drink is just as important as the quantity of water you drink. The water you put in your body must be able to prevent toxins and chemical substances from accumulating and creating destructive influences on cells. Water must also transport minerals and nutrients required for cell metabolism, and remove any substances that can damage the cell. Ideally, the water you drink should have a ph between 9 and 10, and you should be drinking 3-4 liters of it daily.

In order to hydrate your body optimally, you need to drink water that is alkaline and ionized. Alkaline water helps to neutralize stored acids and toxins. Once these acids are neutralized, they can then be removed by the body. Alkaline water containing ionic minerals also acts as a conductor of electrochemical activity from cell to cell. Reports from studies suggest that ionized, alkaline water can help the body resist disease and slow aging by:

  • Increasing Intracellular Hydration
  • Replenishing Essential Minerals
  • Stabilizing and Protecting Cells
  • Helping To Maintain Normal Blood Flow and Acid Alkaline Balance
  • Flushing Out and Preventing Wastes from Accumulating in Cells
  • Preventing Free Radicals from Forming and Damaging Other Cells
