Acidity is quite a simple problem when it begins, but it can get out of hand easily if not taken seriously. It is a common ailment and results from a wrong diet. The excessive secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach causes acidity. Prolonged acidity can cause chronic indigestion, arthritis, gout, ulcers and even false angina pains. Acidity is the condition in which there is an excess secretion of acid within the stomach. Other names for acidity are hyperacidity or acid dyspepsia. In Ayurveda, this condition is recognized as Amalapitta. Acids present in the stomach in order to help in digestion. When foods enter the stomach, the acids come into play and digest them. But some foods are difficult to digest, and so more acids are released. This is when the stomach acidity increases. Other factors that can produce and increase in the stomach acids are gastric ulcers and cancers. The usual signs of heartburn are a burning sensation or pain in the stomach after one to four hours of a meal. The too much secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach causes acidity. Acidity can be a result of improper dietary regimen or stress.

What type of diet should be followed?

Avoid canned and junk food, artificially ripened fruits and vegetables or those kept in cold storage. Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Avoid a heavy intake of spices and aerated drinks that are highly acidic and strong enough to dissolve teeth and bones.

Cold beverages with or after meals should be particularly avoided. Cold drinks dilute the enzymes and put stress on the digestive system. As a result, the food gets fermented leads to acidity.

Avoid excess smoking, tea and coffee. Both nicotine and caffeine are directly related to problems of acidity. Instead, take coconut water, fresh water melon, cucumber juice and thin-skinned lemons because these are alkaline.

Bitter gourd, amla (Indian gooseberry) juice is an excellent remedy for acidity.

Benign lactic acid present in buttermilk, yoghurt are helpful. Raita prepared with fresh curd, grated cucumber, fresh coriander, tomato is a sure shot remedy in aiding digestion, and helps remove acidity.

In acidity, there is a movement of gastric juices (carrying acid) from the stomach into the lower esophagus (food pipe). This condition mainly arises when acidic contents in stomach (hydrochloric acid) move upward into the esophagus and making it dysfunctional.

Some home remedies to treat and prevent acidity -

i. Mix 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, 1/4 teaspoon methi seeds, 1/4 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp ajwain seeds. Roast them on a low flame. Add a pinch of hing (asafetida) and salt and stir for a minute. Grind to a powder when cool and store. Mix 1/2 tsp of powder with 1 teaspoon of curd. Eat twice a day for quick relief.

ii. Pineapple acts as a tonic and relieves digestive disorders. Half a glass of fresh pineapple juice should be taken after a meal for treating and preventing acidity.

iii. Eat almonds to give relief to symptoms of acidity.

iv. Chewing of a carrot increases saliva and quickens digestion by supplying the digestive system with necessary enzymes, minerals and vitamins. The juice of carrot is also beneficial.

v. A very simple remedy for acidity is thin butter-milk mixed with 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper powder. For better results, an equal quantity of cumin (jeera) powder and rock salt is to be added to the buttermilk.

vi. A piece of jaggery or gur after lunch and dinner prevents acidity.

vii. Take one piece of clove and suck it slowly. This will give you relief from acidity.

viii. Eat a cup of vanilla ice cream or drink a glass of cold milk to get heartburn and acidity relief within minutes

In schools across the U.S., teachers use litmus paper tests to demonstrate the difference between acidity and alkalinity to elementary school students. But is the concept of acidity and alkalinity relevant in people’s everyday lives? Yes, because every component of the human body has an essential pH level that is necessary for survival. Therefore people must encourage the proper pH levels in their bodies. So the human body constantly works to maintain the proper pH. This is difficult, because every single cell in the human body is living, breathing, and making waste. And these waste products tend to be acidic. There are several ways in which the body can become too dangerously acidic: if the body gets too much acidic food, if the cells manufacture too much acidic waste, or if the body cannot remove or neutralize these acids. If the acids cannot be neutralized or removed, then the cells are literally bathing in their own waste. This condition is called acidosis, or over-acidity. Acidosis erodes and eats into the cell membranes of the heart, arteries, and veins similar to the way that acid can slowly eat its way through some of the world’s strongest materials, like marble or metal. Over-acidity causes many diseases, as well as premature aging, through slowly eroding and killing the body’s cells. Acidity and the Pancreas Some parts of the body are naturally more alkaline than others. Highly alkaline glands like the pancreas and liver are the most susceptible to acidic damage. Pancreatic juice has a pH level between 7.8 – 8.0. Bile from the liver has a pH between 7.5 – 8.8. But when the acidity of the whole body becomes higher, pancreatic juices and bile also become more acidic. Acidic pancreatic juices and bile become destructive and irritate the surrounding tissues of the pancreas and liver, causing inflammation, stones, ulcers, and even cancer. Overly-acidic bile also causes reflux, or the backflow of bile through the pancreatic duct, up the small intestine, into the stomach, and up into the esophagus. Likewise, bile reflux affects the duodenum and stomach, causing inflammation, ulcers, and cancer. This back-up of bile may trigger an attack of acute pancreatitis and exacerbate the problems of chronic pancreatitis. Gallbladder stones can cause severe damage to the pancreas and liver through the blockage of pancreatic and bile ducts. When the blood becomes too acidic it is difficult for pancreatic cells to acquire the necessary minerals and bicarbonates essential to the production of sufficiently alkaline pancreatic juice. Without appropriately alkaline pancreatic juice many problems appear, such as: Food, Minerals, and a Healthy Pancreas Our contemporary diet is naturally acidic and therefore changes the body’s pH balance towards an acidic state called metabolic acidosis. Metabolic acidosis is becoming more and more prevalent as the standard American’s diet moves away from naturally alkaline-producing foods like fresh vegetables. A body becomes more acidic from a diet too high in acid-producing foods like meat, most dairy products, white flour, sugar, alcohol, refined vegetable oils, soft drinks, and coffee. Other factors that also contribute to the body’s acidity include: stress, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, free radicals, chronic inflammation, and infection. As over-acidity becomes more prevalent, it is being recognized as a dangerous condition that weakens the entire body. normal levels, then the condition is known as acidity.

Hence, acidity is the condition in which there is an excess secretion of acid within the stomach. Other names for acidity are hyperacidity or acid dyspepsia.

Why is Acidity caused?

The stomach is equipped with these acids in order to be able to digest the food. The acids are released when foods enter the stomach. However some foods are difficult to digest than the others. For such foods, the stomach needs to secrete more acids. Continuous secretions of such acids could lead to acidity in the stomach.

This excessive production of acids could be made higher due to various factors. Ulcers in the stomach are one of the commonest causes in increasing acid production.

People with stomach cancers will also have acidity problems as one of the symptoms. For this reason, acidity should not be ignored if it lasts for a long period of time, or if the person is older.

There is a condition known as the acid-reflux complex, due to which the stomach acids are refluxed back to the food pipe. When this happens, a prominent sour taste is felt in the mouth, and a belch might occur.

What are the Symptoms of Acidity?

When a person has acidity in the stomach, there can be a vast difference in the kinds of symptoms observed. For some people it may be a simple bellyache, but for others, it could lead to days of restlessness with continuous cramps in the stomach.

In fact restlessness is the most common symptom of acidity, followed by nausea and vomiting. There is a sour taste felt in the mouth, which is due to the excess deposition of the acids. Sometimes there are sour belches and passing off wind. Other digestive problems like constipation and indigestion will also occur. In some cases, stiffness is felt in the stomach.

How can Acidity be avoided?

A proper dietary pattern is the best thing in order to avoid acidity. The following tips must be followed:-

Avoid foods that are rich in oils and fats. These foods are difficult to digest, so they may make the stomach release more acids.

The diet should contain a proper blend of all the tastes. Spicy foods must be just one dish rather than the whole meal.

Fibers are necessary in the diet as they help in the digestion.

Red meats must be eaten only occasionally, if at all.

After a meal, the body must be given some sort of exercise. This could be as simple as going for a stroll.

Too much addiction to strong foods such as tea and coffee may cause acidity. This is also true for other addictions such as smoking and alcohol.

Do not consume sour foods as they already have acidic contents. Acidic foods to avoid are pickles, curds, tamarinds, vinegar, etc.

How can Acidity be controlled with Simple Home Remedies?

There are several simple household tips to keep acidity under control. The following are some of them:-

Eat two plantains early in the morning and down them with a glass of milk.

Taking two tablespoonfuls of Isabgol (psyllium seed husks) in milk after every meal is beneficial for elimination of acidity.

Squeeze the juice of a whole orange and mix it with roasted cumin seeds. Add some rock salt to flavor it. This solution gives immediate relief from acidity.

Eat equal portions of ginger and coriander. This pacifies the digestive fire.
Mix equal amounts of ginger extract and mint extract. Having this two to four times a day provides relief.

Alternatively, the extract of a ginger can be mixed with equal amount of honey. This is to be put on the tongue every dawn and dusk.

Two teaspoonfuls of powder of amla (Indian gooseberry) taken twice a day is also helpful.

If the acidity continues for a long time, then try adhering to a milk diet. Milk may initially be troublesome to the digestive system, but the indigestible curds it would form in the body would generally be vomited out.

Mixing two teaspoonfuls of ghee in a glassful of milk and taking this once a day acts as a laxative, which would flush out the excess toxins from the body.

Coconut water is good for reducing acidity in the stomach.
If using rice, make sure it is at least two years old. Wheat flour can also be beneficially used to reduce acidity.

Acidity Home Remedy, Ayurvedic Remedies, and Other Treatments

Acidity is the condition in which there is an excess secretion of acid within the stomach. Other names for acidity are hyperacidity or acid dyspepsia. In Ayurveda, this condition is recognized as Amalapitta.

Acids present in the stomach in order to help in digestion. When foods enter the stomach, the acids come into play and digest them. But some foods are difficult to digest, and so more acids are released. This is when the stomach acidity increases. Other factors that can produce and increase in the stomach acids are gastric ulcers and cancers.

When there is acid in the stomach, a sour taste is occasionally felt in the mouth due to the acids entering into the food pipe.

Depending on the different doshas, there can be different symptoms felt in acidity.

1. Vata type of Acidity – This is characterized by a faulty digestion of food, accompanied by colic pains in the stomach.

2. Pitta type of Acidity – This is characterized by typically slow digestion with a feeling of nausea. There is heaviness felt in the stomach.

3. Kapha type of Acidity – This is characterized by a burning sensation in the stomach. It is often accompanied by vomiting and the discharge of a yellowish liquid.

(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Acidity

1. Cardamom (Elattaria cardamomum)

Cardamom not only adds flavor to the food, but it also helps in its proper digestion. It is used as a cure for heartburns.

2. Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Ginger has been used since several centuries in the Indian tradition for the treatment of hyperacidity. In fact, most dishes of the Indian cuisine contain ginger in order to help digestion. Ginger has great effects in reducing the acidity caused due to a non-vegetarian diet.

3 Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis)

Indian gooseberry is known as amalaki.

4 Sandalwood (Santalum album)

Sandalwood is a cooling agent. It reduces the hyperacidity in the stomach.

Amalaki is initially prescribed in order to reduce the hyperacidity of the stomach. Then Shatavari tablet is prescribed. The medication is to be continued for two weeks.

3. Treatment of Kapha Type of Acidity

The treatment begins with fasting to correct the digestive fire. Herbs are given in order to correct the digestive problems. Treatment with Shankha vati and Jeerakadyarishta is prescribed for three weeks.

(4) Home Medications

How Acidity Affects Baby Gender: How PH Helps Determine If You Have A Boy Or A Girl

Yesterday, I received a comment on my blog which asked me to fully explain how your body’s acidity helps to determine your baby’s gender.  I’ll do just that in the following article and will also tell you other things that you should consider if you’re trying to naturally chose your baby’s sex.

Why Acidity Can Be Important In Determining Your Baby’s Gender Or Sex: Before I explain how acidity works (and how you can manipulate it) I need to explain why it’s important.  The sex of your baby is actually determined by one thing – which sex chromosome gets to and fertilizes your egg first.  If a Y chromosome is the winner, then you’ll get a boy.  If it’s an X, then you’ll get a girl. 

The good news is that there are many things that you can do to manipulate which of these will win the race.  In order to do this though, you need to understand that these sperm chromosomes have different personalities.  The girls are very strong and long lived.  It takes a lot to shake them, but they are also slow.  The boys are pretty weak, dying off or deteriorating very quickly, but they are very fast.

So how does acidity fit into this equation? Well, remember that the boy sperm are weak. They can not withstand a high PH or high acidity.  Simply put, this scenario will kill them off (or at least significantly weaken them.)  The girl sperm have no problem with a PH that is sky high.

So, if you want a boy, you need to lower your PH.  If you want a girl, you’ll want to become more acidic with a higher PH. Many people are quite intimidated by this process, but it’s truly not as hard as you may think and it’s an extremely important part of the equation.

The first, easiest step is to find out what your PH currently is. You can get testing strips at most health food stores or on-line.  You can test your saliva and if a few minutes, you’ll have your answer.  Having this information will tell you how far you need to go and approximately how long it will take.

You can change your PH in a few ways.  If you want to lower it (and are trying to conceive a boy) you’ll go on a low PH or alkaline diet and / or douche with solutions meant to make your reproductive tract much more alkaline.  If you’re trying for a girl, you’ll consume mostly acidic foods and would douche with entirely different solutions.  I understand that some people would prefer douching over the diet and vice versa.  You can get good results with only one of these methods, but you’ll move quicker if you combine both.  There are food lists and customized douche recipes that can help with this. Just chose your preference, get started, and keep testing to keep an eye on how much you’re moving up or down.

Natural Cure for Diabetes Type 2

Once You’ve Begun Working On Your Acidity: Once you’ve addressed your acidity, you’ll need to take a look at when you ovulate.  Timing is so important in natural gender selection.  Remember that the girl sperm are long lived.  So, if you want a daughter, you’ll want to have intercourse three days before you ovulate.  But if you’re trying for a son, you’ll need to wait until the day that your egg is released. This is very important. If you try too early for a boy, you’ll allow the Y chromosomes to die off. 

It’s also important that you have a very reliable way to tell you exactly when the egg is released.  Again, I like saliva testers for this.  They’re inexpensive, you can reuse them, and they are very accurate.  The important thing is to find a method that works for you and to use it diligently.

The final thing to take a look at is the sexual positions that you use to conceive.  For a girl conception, you’ll use shallow penetration because you want to expose the Y sperm to the high PH for a longer period of time.  For a boy conception, you’ll use deeper penetration because this will spare the Y sperm a long, difficult trip.

I know this can be a lot to think about, but break it down into small steps.  It’s really not that complicated. Start with determining and changing your PH.  Then, figure out when you ovulate and use the appropriate sexual positions depending on the gender that you want.
